Anna: Do we have chocolate cookies at home?
Me: Yes.
Anna: Can I have a chocolate cookie when we get home?
Me: No, you already had a gingerbread man at church.
[...]
Anna: But gingerbread men aren't cookies.
Me: Yes they are.
Anna: No, they're just gingerbread.
[...]
Me: Nice try.

Anna: What does that sign mean?
Me: It has a picture of a deer on it. It means that we need to watch out for deer.
Anna: Sometimes deer fly.
Me: Honey, deer don't fly.
Anna: The ones that pull Santa's sleigh - they can fly.
Me: Uh, yes. But those are REINdeer.
Anna: Reindeer can fly?
Me: Only some reindeer can fly.
Anna: Which reindeer can fly?
Me: Only Santa's reindeer can fly.
Anna: Why?
Me: [inward cringe] Because they're magic.
Anna: My sunglasses are magic too.
Me: Yes! Yes they are, honey.

A Few Stories

Wow, it's been 10 months since I used this blog! I have some stories that, if tweeted, would have lead to a fragmented tweetstorm, so I'm going to do the prose thing this time.

Anna's Assessment
The other night Anna misbehaved a bit and was sent to her room with instructions to calm down, think about it, and when she was ready to be calm and make better choices, she could come back down. She stayed in her room and raged for only about 30 seconds, then appeared at the top of the stairs, still visibly upset. We asked her if she was really ready to be calm and behave herself.

With emotion in her voice, she started plodding down the stairs and blurted out, "I DON'T KNOW. LET'S SEE."

The Game
Anna received a number of games for Christmas. One of them is The Sneaky, Snacky Squirrel. During the game, if the spinner lands on a certain picture, you can steal an acorn from another player. At first Anna was not happy about this at all, but now she is a fierce advocate. I was taken off-guard the first time she got the steal move and went for one of my acorns. With her pointer finger bobbing in the air, she laid down the law: "Now DON'T cry. It's ONLY a GAME."

In the Eyes
She's picked up an interesting take on how to tell if someone is sleepy or not. When we ask her if she's sleepy, she'll often place her finger just under her lower eyelid, pull the eyelid down, and say "No, I'm not sleepy. See? There's no sleep in my eyes!"
